Averna is one of Italy's classic bittersweet digestifs and is still made according to the original 1868 recipe. Although the exact ingredients remain a secret, it's a luxurious mix of flavors: caramel, orange zest, juniper, rosemary and anise. It's slightly sweeter and more plush, which makes it a wonderful complement to ice cream (especially espresso or coffee flavored). Dessert could not be easier or more delicious.
